RLS and Muscle Cramps


The Ingredients that matter for RLS

RLS (or Restless Leg Syndrome) is characterised by the compelling urge to move the legs, particularly when in bed and trying to sleep. The underlying cause is still unknown, but it is thought to involve a malfunctioning of the nervous system. A deficiency in critical vitamins and minerals has been linked to the muscle twitching associated with RLS

4 of the most important of these are Magnesium, Vitamin B12, Vitamin B9 (Folic Acid) and Iron.

ActiveMg contains 3 of these and we will discuss the 4th one (Iron) a little further down in this text.

Magnesium is essential for neurotransmitter function, muscle contraction and muscle relaxation, bone formation and cell formation.

One of the problems linked with RLS is low dopamine levels in the nerves and the combination of Vitamins B9 and B12 help to regulate dopamine, thereby relaxing the muscle twitch.

How does it work?

ActiveMg, at the full dose rate of 3 capsules per day, provides 300mg of elemental magnesium, 900 mcg of Folate (Vitamin B9) and 900 mcg of Vitamin B12

Magnesium is used as a natural remedy for RLS, especially when a deficiency is thought to contribute to the condition. Researchers believe that magnesium makes it easier for muscles to relax. This may be because of its calcium-blocking abilities, which help regulate the nerves and muscles instead of letting calcium “activate” the nerves. If magnesium is low, calcium isn't blocked and nerves become overactive and trigger muscle contractions.

Vitamin B12, in the fully absorbable methyl form, is provided at a level of 900 mcg from the 3 capsule per day dosage. B12 combines well with the B9 to help with the regulation of moods, by increasing levels of dopamine in the body. 

So what about the Iron?

In the opening paragraph we mentioned Iron as a critical element for treatment of RLS and other leg cramps. Low Iron levels have often been associated with RLS and Iron should be a critical part of your diet to ensure full recovery from the symptoms of RLS, however long term supplementation with Iron can have some undesirable side effects for some people and for this reason we don’t include it into our product.

What we do suggest is that you supplement with Iron on an occasional basis, (perhaps every alternative month) taking around 20mg per day. Iron supplements are readily available at any pharmacy and are very cheap, so they are an easy add on to your supplement regime.

The other reason we do not include Iron in our formula is that, for maximum absorption, Iron is best taken on an empty stomach, while our formula is best taken with food, so if we included any iron in our supplement it might not be well absorbed.

So, in summary, you could take 3 capsules of ActiveMg in the morning with breakfast, or in the evening with dinner, then take your additional Iron supplement just before going to bed, on an empty stomach. ActiveMg would be taken every day, continuously, and the Iron could be taken everyday for one month, then one month off.

This would be the ideal mix to give you maximin absorption of all elements in a safe and productive way.
